General description: This block is a half square triangle with one bisected side. It is the corner stone (no pun intended) of the Quilty Friend block of the month program and will create a secondary pattern of pinwheels. In order to see the pinwheels you need to select colors that are highly contrasting when planning fabrics for your quilt.
Cutting Directions: These directions are written to make 4, 4" finished blocks. There are 3 pieces in each block for a total of 12 pieces to cut. The colors refer to the colors in the diagram.
- Grey -
- Cut one 5 1/4" square
- Sub cut diagonally twice to make 4 small triangles
- White -
- Cut one 5 1/4" square
- Sub cut diagonally twice to make 4 small triangles
- Pink -
- Cut two 5 1/4" squares
- Sub cut each square diagonally one time for a total of 4 large triangles
- Sew one grey and one white small triangle together to make a large triangle.
- Being careful not to warp the triangles, iron seams open.
- BE CAREFUL TO MAKE THEM ALL THE SAME and make 4
- Using the right angle to align the pieces, sew each two colored triangle to a large pink triangle.
- Trim the excess seam allowance (This should be fabric from the large pink triangle.)
- Being careful not to warp the triangles, iron seams toward the pink fabric (the side with the least number of seams in it.)
- Trim square to 4 1/2"
- Make 4
